Abstract:

Brucellosis is a zoonotic, natural focal infectious disease caused by invasion of Brucella into human body, with a wide distribution globally. It exhibits pronounced systemic invasiveness, affecting multiple systems, among which damage to the osteoarticular (bone and joint) system stands out as one of the most prevalent complications. The precise pathogenic mechanism by which Brucella induces osteoarticular system damage remains incompletely understood. Furthermore, due to the atypical early clinical symptoms and imaging manifestations, its clinical diagnosis and treatment encounter significant challenges. By the time most patients receive a definitive diagnosis, the disease has often already progressed to an advanced stage, characterized by severe destruction of bone tissue, leading to catastrophic functional impairment and a sharp decline in quality of life. To enhance clinical practitioners’ awareness and understanding of Brucella-induced osteoarticular system damage, we reviewed the pathogenic mechanisms of Brucella on osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and bone cells, aiming to provide novel insights and directions for the research and treatment of this disease.
