Abstract:

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a key enzyme in heme metabolism. It plays a critical regulatory role in processes such as oxidative stress, immune response, and cellular metabolism. In recent years, HO-1 has become a focal point of tuberculosis research. Starting from the biological characteristics of HO-1, this article systematically elucidates its dual role in the development of pulmonary tuberculosis. On this basis, we further explore the predictive value of HO-1 as a potential biomarker for tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment guidance, and prognosis assessment. The article also reviews recent advances in host-directed therapeutic strategies targeting HO-1, including pharmacological interventions and their synergistic effects with existing anti-tuberculosis drugs. Finally, we analyze the current controversies and key challenges in the field and provide future perspectives. The aim is to offer a theoretical foundation and research directions for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, as well as for the improvement of tuberculosis prevention and control practices.
